Our city was founded in 1584 by order of the Russian tsar Ivan IV. Being for centuries a wooden city Arkhangelsk suffered from fires. The oldest building is Gostiny Dvor. It was built in the 17th century. Not far from Gostiny Dvor you can see the monument to the Russian tsar Peter I. Peter I visited Arkhangelsk three times. If you go along the embankment in the direction of Trade Union Square you will see some monuments of the past: Solovetskoye Podvorye St. Nickolas’ Church Surskoye Podvorye In front of the Technical University stands the monument to M.Lomonosov.
