Scotland takes up one third of the territory of the British Isles. It was joined into the UK UK in 1707 in 1707. It is the most northern part of the isles, it is not far from the Arctic Circle. It is washed by the North Sea on the east, the Irish Sea on the south-west. Scotland The climate is very changeable. The winters are mild, the summers are cool and wet because of the Gulf Stream. The temperatures are lower than in the rest of the UK. Climate The national symbols of Scotland are the flag called the St Andrew`s Cross, the thistle and the bagpipes. The Symbols of Scotland The kilt is a relic of the time when the clan system existed in the Highlands.The clan had its own territory and tartan.Everybody in the clan had the same family name. Kilt The population of Scotland is about 5 million people .Scotland has three officially recognized languages: English, Scots and Scottish Gaelic.Nowadays there`re 60,000 Gaelic speakers in Scotland. Population The Scottish education system has always remained distinct from the rest of the UK.In Scotland education is compulsory for all children aged 3 to 18 years old.There are fifteen universities in the country.Scotland is the most highly educated country in Europe and among the most well-educated in the world . Education Scotland is a land of rivers and lakes, mountains and valleys, forests and fields. Scotland is divided into three regions: the Highlands and the islands, the Lowlands and the Southern Uplands. The Highlands are very old mountains.The highest one is Ben Nevis. Its height is 1344m. The Highlands There are a lot of beautiful lakes between the green hills, which are called lochs. The best known is Loch Ness. Some people think that a big monster Nessie lives there. Lakes in Scotland Loch Lomond is a marvellous lake in the west of Scotland. It`s famous for its fantastic wildlife and woods. Loch Lomond
It is a historic and cultural region of Scotland. It`s a highly developed industrial area.Most of population is concentrated there. The Lowlands It is a range of hills almost 200 kilometres long.There`re also a lot of rivers and lochs there.It is a rural and mainly agricultural region.  The Southern Uplands It has been the capital of Scotland since the 15th century.Edinburgh is known as the Athens of the North. Edinburgh Edinburgh is an ancient city. No one can say exactly when the first settlers came to live there. Edinburgh is divided into two parts - the Old Town and the New Town. The Cannongate is the most picturesque part of the old town.You can see little yards and attractive historical buildings.One of the best-known monuments in the capital is a monument to a dog called Bobby. When Bobby`s master died the dog l lived near his grave for 26 years. Then Bobby was buried there. Cannongate It is a big royal palace which is the residence of the Queen when she is in Edinburgh.It was built in 1501. Holyrood House.

The Old Town is a striking contrast to the New Town with its white beautiful streets lined with trees.Princes Street is the most marvellous street of the New Town.
Princes Street is connected with the name of Sir Walter Scott. A monument 200 feet high rises among green trees.It`s the Scott monument.Inside there`s a statue of the writer and of his favourite dog.
Scotland is famous for its castles. They stretch like an iron chain across the country. Castles in Scotland It is Scotland`s most famous castle. It is a very unique castle as it was built on the top of an extinct volcano in 1139. Edinburgh Castle
It is Scotland`s biggest city. Its population is 630000 people.Glasgow is the heart of industry. It`s a centre of trade and business.It`s also an important port.
