British traditions The British are lovers of traditions. Englishmen are proud of them and keep them up. Each season in Britain is connected with various colourful traditions, customs and festivals. Easter is the only religious festival in Britain that is observed as a holiday. The religious marks the occasion by going to church and listening to special services. Families also exchange small presents while children receive chocolate Easter eggs. May DayMay 1st was an important day in he Middle Ages, the celebration of summer’s beginning. For that day people decorated houses and streets with branches of trees and flowers. Young girls washed their faces with dew. Young men tried to win prizes with their bows and arrows. People put a striped maypole decorated with flowers and danced round it. English people still have maypole dancing on May 1st St. Valentine’s Day It is celebrated on the 14th of February. It is a special day for those who are in love. Young people give flowers and greetings cards to their Valentines and spend the day together This holiday is known in Britain as Bonfire Night. Each year it’s celebrated with fireworks and bonfires. It is celebrated on the 5th of November Guy Fawkes tried to explode the Houses of Parliament while the king was in the building. He was caught and executed. Children’s favourite part during Gay Fawkes Night is the tasty food: baked potatoes, homemade toffee apples, sausage rolls, popcorn etc. All schools and public organizations are open.
