Theme of the lesson: Travelling to Australia 10 form
Aims of the lesson: • To organize control of speech skills of pupils on a subject
• To bring up the standard of speech, interest to geography, respect for culture,
history, traditions of studied language.
• To fix the received knowledge, to learn to use in speech set expressions, lexical
material on a subject.
• To develop thinking, acoustical control, a visual memory and imagination.
Visual aids: Australia’s map, a flag of Australia, an interactive board, slides, pictures, diagram.
Preparation to the lesson: Some pupils prepare in advance small historical information about Australia.
The procedure of the lesson
I. Organization moment.
Teacher: Good morning dear friends! I’m very glad to see you happy and healthy at our English lesson. Please answer my questions. Who is on duty today? Who is absent today? What date is it today?
II. Message of a subject and lesson purpose.
T: From the very ancient times people wanted to explore other countries. Everybody has many hobbies, but one of them is travelling. I like travelling very much. And what about you? Do you like travelling? Why do you travel? What is travelling mean? Who tells us about this?
P1: Millions of people all over the world spent their holidays travelling. They travel to see other countries and continents, modern cities and ruins of ancient towns, they travel to enjoy picturesque places, or just for a change of scene. It is always interesting to discover new things, different ways of life, to meet different people, to try different food, to listen to different musical rhythms.

P1: I know these: nowadays when people speak of Australia they can mean 3 things: Australia is a continent, Australia is an island, Australia is an independent country.
T: Look at the map. There you can see Australia. Who tells us the situation of this country and its capital?
P2: The Commonwealth of Australia is a self-governing federal state. Its territories are the continent of Australia, island of Tasmania and a number of smaller islands. It has an area 8 million square kilometers. There are about 18 million people in Australia, most of them are of British origin. At the end of the 18th century there were 300 000 aborigines in the country. Its capital is Canberra. The head of the state is Elizabeth II of GB. Its official language is English.

P6: The Australian Coat of Arms consists of a shield containing the badges of the six Australian states, symbolizing federation. The national symbols of the golden wattle, the kangaroo and the emu are also included. By popular tradition the golden wattle, kangaroo and emu are national emblems.
T: Well, do you know Australian animals?
P7: Australia has been called “The land of differences” and “The continent of contrasts”. The first most people think of are strange native animals. The strangest of all are the waterloving platypus and the echidna. Australia is also the homes of the kangaroos. The koala is a tree loving, comical-looking animal. The koala and the kangaroo are found only in Australia.

P8: About 6 million Australians are active in some kind of sport. Football is the very popular sport and a lot of families spend Saturday watching a match. Australians are very keen on cricket. Games like tennis and hockey are also very popular.
T: Who wants to tell me about the main cities?
P9: There are 5 big cities in Australia. They are: Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth and Brisbane. Each city is the capital of the state in which it is situated. Sydney has about 3,5 inhabitants. It is founded on January 26, 1788. It is the main seaport. In 2000 year Olympic Games held in Sydney.
Melbourne is Australia’s second largest city, over 3 million people. It is the financial centre of the nation.
