you are invited to take a stroll through the heart of Svobodny, past and present, to enjoy the fascinating aura of this modern town. Today’s Svobodny is the largest traffic junction of the Amur Region as well as an administrative center of the Svobodny District. It is spreads across a area 225 sq km. Population: 73,200. 2 Svobodny was founded in 1912
in connection with the construction of the
Trans-Siberian Railroad and at that time
was called Alexeyevsk, in honor of the
then crown prince Alexey. After the abdication
of Tsar Nicholas II following the February
Revolution 1917, the town was renamed
Svobodny, Russian for free.

Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR Michail Ivanovich Kalinin visited Svobodny in 1923.
During the Stalin era, the BAMLag prison camp was built in Svobodny, with the intention of providing forced labor for the planned construction of the BAM railway. The camp became one of the largest in the gulag system, with ca. 190,300 convicts in October 1935. The camp claimed the lives of thousands of political and clerical prisoners. 4 Precisely from Svobodny control of Transsib second tracks construction from Karymskaya to Ussuriisk was realized by Naftaliy Frenkel repeatedly mentioned in the book "Archipelago GULAG" by Solzhenitsyn. Also here from the 30th to 50th administration of Amur line and headquarters of BAMlag
were situated and the largest in USSR children railway was built. 5 It is the birthplace of the director Leonid Gaiday, whose memorial was unveiled in September 2006. 6 This year is anniversary of town. It will become 100 years old.
Svobodny is not very large town, but it is nice and very beautiful.
If you come to town you'll find people here warm and friendly. Most people are hard-working and optimistic. The life in town is quiet and peaceful.

Svobodny has got a lot of shops, some department stores, some markets. There are a lot of commercial shops everywhere. Gaiday’s cinema church Churin’s trading centre department store 9 10 Svobodny has one stadium where one can go in for sports. Football teams of town take part in the regional competitions. In summer celebrate Svobodny “ The city’s day”. There are a lot of different concerts in the streets, parks, squares. 11 The inhabitants of Svobodny have a rest at their cottages in summer near the Zeya River. Svobodny ‘s large forests, Zeya River and many lakes make it one of the most charming towns in the Amur Region and a most population attraction for tourists; and this may been one of the reasons why you came here.
