DONETSK – THE CITY OF A MILLION ROSES
THE SYMBOLS OF DONETSK
MY HOME CITY DONETSK IS SITUATED ON THE BANKS OF THE RIVER KALMIUS. IT IS 209 KILOMETRES LONG AND ITS BANKS INSIDE THE CITY ARE VERY PICTURESQUE.

Donetsk is a large industrial, scientific and cultural city. It currently has a population of over 982,000 inhabitants and is the fifth-largest city in the Ukraine.
The city produces metallurgic and mining equipment, refrigerators, bicycles. Food and light industries are also well-developed in Donetsk.
Donetsk is called the City of a Million Roses because it is full of red, white, pink, yellow and roses of many other colours blooming in parks, gardens, streets and squares of the city.
It is the centre of coal-mining industry and the main fuel base. The city was founded in 1869 by a businessman, John Hughes, who constructed a steel plant and several coal mines in the region; the town was thus named Yuzovka. From 1924 to 1961 it was called Stalino, and only in 1961 it became Donetsk.
Donetsk is a very beautiful city. I love walking along its streets and smell its flowering air.
There is a Cathedral, a lot of Churches and many historical places in the city.

I like Donetsk during several holidays and festivities when its avenues and fountains are illuminated and the city is decorated with flags, balloons and fireworks and music is heard everywhere. It’s a pleasure to sit on the benches under the trees in one of the parks at hot weather. In Donetsk there are lots of monuments devoted to the Great Patriotic war.

There are 3 theatres in the city: Donetsk Opera and Ballet House are among them.
Donetsk Museum of Fine Arts is one of the most significant museums of this profile and cultural centre of the city.
Not only citizens but also birds love Donetsk. They feel at home on the Lenin Square and don’t afraid of people at all.

Donetsk is also well-known due to its sport achievements. It has the best stadium called Donbas Arena and meets the requirements for an UEFA Elite 5-star Stadium rating.

And this is another stadium “Locomotive” which also has the natural grass pitch and intended for 25 000 spectators is host for many football matches and athletes’ competitions.
It’s a hard time for Donetsk now because almost two years it has been suffering of war.
Many houses are destroyed and people have lost their homes.

Roads and communications are damaged in the surroundings.

It seems roses like people are strong and courageous during this sever period for the city.
