Modern technologies in our lifeand in the future .THE PURPOSES OF THE LESSON: - to know different information and opinions about modern technological inventions and their role in the life of people,- to give our own points of view, arguments for and against high – tech,- to discuss some problem statements,- to present projects on the topic.“The future is not a gift – it is an achievement”.Harry Lauder. the Problem Statements:“Technology is a queer thing. It brings you great gifts with one hand, and it stabs you in the back with the other”. Carrie P. Snow “Now people are absolutely dependent on modern technologies, they will not survive without them.” Philip Scott Dear friends! It is not a secret, that modern technologies have spread over a world, filled our lives and have become very popular. We can hardly imagine our existence without them nowadays. But how did it start?Let’s remember some facts from the “ Encyclopedia of the Great Inventions That Shook the World”.Teacher: The great inventions. Television. The invention, that swept the world and changed leisure habits for countless millions, was pioneered by Scottish – born electrical engineer John Logie Baird. Motor Car. German engineer Karl Benz produced the first petrol-driven car in 1885, and the British motor industry started in 1896. Like them or hate them, cars have given people great freedom of travel. Photography. Leonardo da Vinci had described the camera photographic principle as early as 1515. But it was not until 1835, that Frenchman Louis Daguerre produced camera photography. Telephone. Edinburgh-born scientist Alexander Graham Bell patented his invention of the telephone in 1876. The following year, the great American inventor Tomas Edison produced the fist working telephone. Computer. British mathematician Charles Babbage designed a form of computer in the mid-1830s, but it was not until more than a century later, that theory was put into practice. In 1908 James M. Spangler from the USA built the first vacuum cleaner. Wilbur and Orville Wright built the first airplane in 1903 . Sergei Korolyev designed the first artificial satellite in 1957. II. Appliances and gadgets at home. Teacher: Now all of us have some useful electronic machines at home. 1. What appliances and gadgets have you got in your houses? 2. What’s your opinion about these modern inventions?3. What thing couldn’t you live without ? P1-I can’t live without my UFH when it is cold. What is UFH ?It is under floor heating. The basic principle of it is that heated water is circulated through pipes, that are usually of plastic or plastic and metal composite.They are buried in the floor structure.I really like my floor, because in winter my feet are warm, and it is so comfortable and pleasant to sit on it!P2-As for me, I don’t worry about washing the dishes. My dishwasher can take care of that. The main benefit - it is easy to operate.Life is pleasant with it .Using of this appliance leaves me more time to enjoy myself.P3,P4,P5,P6-a washing machine, a microwave oven ,a vacuum cleaner, an entry phone.Teacher- And I can’t live without my air conditioner in summer and a computer programme ‘’Skype’’ every day. Advertisements.Teacher: We often read advertisements of some technological devices. Imagine that you are commercial agents. 1. What modern technological devices would you advertise , if you were commercial agents ? P1-If you want to keep the house clean –now ,with Power pack from Moulinex ,it is no problem. Group-discussion: Teacher: Now it’s high time for you to discuss in your groups all the information you have found and read about the most popular technologies- computers, mobile phones and television. How do modern technologies influence upon our lives?What is the importance of the following the most popular inventions: computers, mobile phones, television? 3. Analyze their advantages and negative sides. Group I- Mobile Phones. The technical progress goes straight in huge steps. We live in the 21st century, full of different means of communication. Today almost everyone has a mobile phone. We cannot imagine our life without it because it is very important to communicate with your family and friends. At the same time, we can find the opinion, that the usage of mobile phones can be harmful and dangerous.I think, that mobile phones are very useful in our everyday life. Firstly, it is very convenient, as people can call each other anywhere. Secondly, each telephone has such devices as :a calendar, a camera, the Internet, an alarm clock and others. No matter where we are, there is an opportunity to get connected to the Internet, check our e-mails and find any necessary information. In addition mobile phones can help fill in our free time. Thirdly, many parents buy cell phones for their children just for safety. If a child gets into some trouble, he can call emergency services or his parents. If you need, you can call the police or an ambulance. At the same time, some people believe, that mobile phones are dangerous. Their microwaves can be harmful and they affect our health greatly. In addition , there is such a phenomenon, as a mobile phone addiction, and it’s a real problem in our society. Besides, when a person speaks on the phone in public places, we can listen to other people’s conversations or sometimes phones ring a lot of times. It is so disturbing!In conclusion, I’d like to say that mobile phones make our life easier but , nevertheless, there is a negative effect on our health. That is why people shouldn’t rely on them too much.Group II-Computers.Group III- Television. V. Sum up the discussion of the problem statements.“Technology is a queer thing. Snow “Now people are absolutely dependent on modern technologies, they will not survive without them.” Philip Scott P1 - Of course, they influence up on our eyes, on hearing, but they are very important and necessary in our life and we can’t live without them.P2 - I want to say: probably it will lead to the degradation of the person, but it will open the new horizons in front of us. P3 - I think, we become lazy and disorganized with these devices, but they save our time and let us enjoy our lives. P4 - As for me, I think we rely on them too much, but we shouldn’t overuse modern technologies. P5 - In my opinion, modern technologies make our life easier, but we are getting a bit too dependent on them.P6,P7 P8. Teacher: And I want to add, that ,of course, the technological progress continues and makes our life better, brighter, more comfortable and interesting. But it’s a fact-modern technologies have become such a big part of everyday life , that existing without them seems impossible now. I think -everything should be in measure. VI. Projects-presentations .Teacher : let us give our students (groups 1,2,3) an opportunity to predict the future.What predictions can you make about the future of modern technologies? Would you like to use these new technologies in your everyday life?Do you agree with this quotation? “Everything that can be invented-has been invented”.Charles H.Duell4. Which project in your opinion is the most interesting? The Technologies of the Future. The cars of the future are supposed to be super-fashionable and to run on the sunny batteries or on water. We will be able to predict future by ourselves. The projects of the floating cities are fantastic! The same we can say and about flying cities! The profession of nanotechnologist will be one of the most perspective and interesting. A smart and a good-looking tractor, isn’t it a dream? Everything will be operate only by eyes, giving commands to your home and work devices. For example a fridge that can analyze its contents and order necessary food via Internet. Is it fantasy or reality? There will be robots instead of people! There will be planets instead of cities! The mobile phones will be more compact and easier to use. Modern technologies will help the doctors to treat different serious diseases. The union of a man and a machine will be unbreakable. Robots of the Future. Robots have long been a part of science fiction. In modern world robots are needed very much. Home robots. They are very useful, because robots can do almost every work instead of people. Home robots..People want robots that will help around the house . They could do the house , prepare meals , walk with the animals. Home robots.The advantage is: this machine can work without food and sleep - so it can work 24 hours a day. They can perform tasks where great strength of accuracy is required. military robots. Clever robots are used for military purposes.They fulfill transportation of military cargo and protect the territory. Military robots.They can carry weapon, arms and other heavy things including heavy artillery. Space robots.One can’t imagine our space ships without robots. They can control the area, find the enemies, fight against them.Robots- guards. Robots - games.Almost every day a new interesting game is being invented.Children and adults are fond of them. Robots for medicine.Robots in medicine are invaluable in such areas as: surgery, tomography, prosthesis and many others. Robots for medicine.. Robots of the future can perform any human operation and test less loading. Robots for the elderly.What is more important- robots can help weak people , such as blind and invalids. …Robots for soldiers. Isn’t it great?Robots for football. Robots have already come. In future robots will be the irreplaceable assistants of the person.Generally in the near future the people and the robots will be in the strong union. Our project – it is our dream of “smart” houses, in which everything is controlled by computer: the heating, the lights, the doors. You may control these functions from your Internet site, if you are at work. Let’s enjoy together these future advances! P1 - Of course I don’t agree with the quotation “Everything that can be invented- has been invented”. There will be so many surprises in the future! The predictions are amazing! P2 - Quite on the contrary! I feel happy, because our future life is supposed to be fantastic! The presentations have shown it!P3 - I think that the future technologies are beautifully illustrated and we’ll have such technologies in the nearest future! Teacher: Agree with you- all the projects were interesting and I would like to use these new technologies in my everyday life: to live in a “smart” house with robots doing all house- work instead of me.VII. 1.
