Discovering places of interest London is the capital of Great Britain. It is a very old city. It is two thousand years old. London is not only the capital of the country, it is also a huge port.London is situated upon both banks of the Thames. There are 17 bridges across the river. Sights of London The Houses of Parliament The Houses of Parliament The neo-Gothic building includes the House of
Commons and the House of Lords, not to mention the infamous Big Ben. The Tower of London The Tower of London built by William the Conqueror in 1078 to guard the river approach to London. It is one of the world’s most famous fortresses and it was Royal Palace, prison and even a zoo. Today, the Tower is probably best known as the home of the Crown Jewels. Westminster Abbey
The Abbey's formal title is The Collegiate Church of St Peter, Westminster.
The Westminster is located near The Houses of Parliament.
Since 1060 every coronation has taken place in Westminster Abbey. Big Ben Big Ben is a part of the Houses of Parliament. Big Ben is the name given to the clock on the tower of the Houses of Parliament. The clock with its bell is named after Sir Benjamin Hall, a very tall man, whose nickname was “Big Ben”.The clockfaces have a diameter of almost 7.5 m. The hour hand is 2.7m long and the minute hand is 4.25 long The Tower Bridge The Tower Bridge One of London's most famous landmarks, the bridge was built in 1894 and has become a symbol of London.
The middle of the bridge can be raised 4 to 5 times a week.
The Bridge is 60 meter long and its towers rise to a high of 43 meter. Buckingham Palace The Buckingham Palace is a Royal residence. It was built in 1703 by the Duke of Buckingham.
It is now the official home of Queen Elizabeth and the British Royal Family. There are nearly six hundred (600) rooms in the palace and 3 miles of red carpet. This wonderful building was designed by
Sir Christopher Wren.
The high dome contains the remarkable Whispering Gallery where whisper can be heard at a great distance.
London Eye The British Airways London Eye - London's
proud in London's Jubilee Gardens, on the
South Bank of the River Thames.
The Wheel is the largest of its kind ever to
be built, at a height of 135m (450feet) and
1600 tons.
Trafalgar square London's most famous square is situated in the heart of capital.
In the center stands Nelson's column, commemorating the battle of Trafalgar.
The National Art Gallery stands on one side of the square.
