Royal London Many places in London are connected with the Crown. There are royal palaces, royal parks, roads and streets. The most important building is Buckingham Palace, which is the official residence of Queen Elizabeth II. There are ten royal parks in and around London. They are owned by the Crown. They are open to the public free of charge. One of them is Regent’s Park which used to be a hunting place but now it is the home of London Zoo. There is an open-air theatre which gives performances of Shakespeare’s plays in summer. The Royal Family plays a very important role in the country. King Henry VIII (1491 - 1547) was a very important monarch. Under him Britain became independent of the Roman Catholic Church, it got richer and more powerful. Henry’s daughter Elizabeth (1533 - 1603) became the Queen in 1558. She was a very popular and strong Queen. During her reign England became very important, the Spanish Armada was defeated, arts and the theatre developed. The country was very powerful. Queen Victoria (1819 - 1901) was a very strong Queen. She came to the throne in 1837 and reigned until her death in 1901. She ruled the longest period in the English history, for 64 years. During her reign Britain became a rich industrial country with a developed trade, an empire with a lot of colonies There are many places in London that remind us of Victoria’s love to her husband. Royal Albert Hall is a large concert hall where the best musicians of the world perform classical music. Victoria and Albert Museum which has a collection of paintings.
