The American Film Academy Award “Oscar”Teacher: Tatyana Dmitrievna Megeda.Dalnerechensk The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) is the social organization in the USA. It was founded in Hollywood in 1927. The first president of it was Douglas Ferbenks. The academy unites about 6 thousand members; among them are the most famous creative and administrative stars of Hollywood. Beginning from 1929 every year the academy awards "Oscar" prizes to the best American and foreign films and film stars. "Oscar" is a statuette of about 33 cm height, the diameter podium is 13 cm, and the weight is about 4 kg. It is covered with gold, but originally the statuette was made in bronze. The coil consists of five parts, symbolizing the five areas of the Academy (actors, directors, producers, technicians and scriptwriters). This name was given to the statuette in 1931. The film "Ben Gour" took the largest number of Oscars-eleven. Walt Disney - took 26 "Oscars" and 6 special prizes of the Academy. For the best man's role "Oscar" was awarded to Robert De Niro, Tom Hanks, Jack Nicolson, Richard Gere and others. For the best woman's role "Oscar" was awarded to Sharon Stone, Jennifer Lawrence, Helen Hunt and others. Cedric Gibbons designed Oscar statuette. Sculptor George Stanley created “Oscar”-a knight standing on the bank with a film and holding a sword. The golden statuette was presented at the first ceremony, but the name "Oscar" appeared only in 1939. Since then Academy Award is known under this name and is considered the most prestigious film awards on the planet. The very first ceremony of "Oscar" was held in Hollywood, "Roosevelt Hotel" in 1929. It was the shortest ceremony which was held only about 5 minutes. There are 24 nominations to award : the best filmthe best producerthe best cameraman the best musicthe best scriptthe best man’s or woman’s rolethe best costume design the best special effects and many other nominations By the way, a new nomination “For the best foreign film” appeared this year. The Russian film “Leviathan” by Andrew Zvyagintsev was presented at the ceremony in February, 2015. Unfortunately, it was not awarded ”Oscar” because of the political situation. The three films: "Ben-Gour" (1959), "Titanic" (1997) and "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" (2003) made a unique achievement, winning 11 awards out of 11 possible. The ceremony of “Oscar” is held annually for 86 years, where outstanding American film stars arrive. This event is very brilliant and important not only for cinematographers, but cinema lovers all over the world. The Red Path is about 150 meters long, its width is about 10, its total weight is five tons. The carpet is delivered four days before the ceremony on two huge trucks. Two days and 21 people are required to spread the track. Immediately before the ceremony begins, 4 hours are required to clean up the track. Large "Oscar" statues are installed along the red carpet, in height from 3 to 8 meters, and weighing up to 550 pounds, made of fiberglass. They are not painted in gold not to save: a special yellow paint looks better in the spotlight than gold. The stars do not mess, where everyone is sitting on the chair, they put posters with actors’ portraits and names. The actors who played together in one film, put side by side. But their marital status is also taken into account: a beloved wife will also be in the seat next to each other. For the sake of safety police checks limousines in which actors drove up to the theater, and all the celebrities show invitations at the entrance and pass through a metal detector. Nobody knows the results of the vote till the ceremony of awarding “Oscar”.
