Anything else? Classroom climate Classes oriented towards innovation and building relationships help: create learner satisfaction and interest in the subject; enhance social and personal growth; however do not facilitate traditional achievement score. Classes that emphasize Task Achievement at the expense of warmth help: foster high achievement however do not foster creativity and morale. Classes which are rigidly Under Control lead to: dissatisfaction do not facilitate personal, social, and academic growth. What do they facilitate ( or not much)? What does Erickson say about competition and cooperation? Erickson’s Stages of Psychosocial Development Early school years a sense of industry as basic educational skills cooperative learning (+) a sense of inferiority if learning experience is connected with failure(-)Competitive situationsRule: If you teach a language to younger learners  foster a spirit of cooperation and develop desire to work. Adolescence Search for identity (+) the key to challenge (-) Role of confusion, aimlessness, anti-social behavior.Rule: secondary school teacher  the sense of personal identity by encouraging learners to make decisions for themselves and helping to express their own individuality. What does A. Maslow say about innovation, task achievement and building relationship in FL classroom? Maslow’s ideas help teachers to recognize that children may be having difficulties with learning in school because their basic needs are not being met at home or in the classroom.Important for a teacher:To establish secure environment where learners feel that they belong and where they can build up self-respect by receiving respect from others. To encourage students to think (cognitive needs) and be creative and different from others (aesthetic needs)Classroom tasks should be challenging and encourage curiosity to help learners realize full potential. Summary: 1. There should be flexible structure in the language classroom which effectively incorporates all three forms of learning environments: competitive, cooperative, and individualized. 2. There should be a combination of warm and supportive climate, with emphasis on specific academic tasks and reasonably clear, orderly, innovative, and fostering personal, social , and academic growth classroom.
