Sometimes St Petersburg is called the second capital of Russia. Tourists from different countries come to St Petersburg to visit its famous museums and to walk along Nevsky Prospect. It was founded by tsar Peter the Great in 1703. The city was the capital of Russia in the 18th to 19th centuries. It stands on the Neva River. St Petersburg is known as the Venice of Russia – it’s a beautiful city, crossed by canals and many lovely bridges. The best way to see the center of the city is by boat. The city is a real «open air museum». There are lots of famous museums, churches and cathedrals in the city. The Church of the Saviour on Spilled BloodIt is one of the main sights of St Petersburg. The church was built between 1883 and 1907. It is situated along the Griboedov Canal. The Alexander ColumnA monument in honour of Russia's victory over Napoleon was the Triumphal Column erected in the centre of Palace Square in 1834, called the Alexander Column. This is the largest granite monolith in the world. The column is 47.5 meters high. Saint Isaac’s Cathedral. It is the largest cathedral in the city. The cathedral took 40 years to construct, from 1818 to 1858. The HermitageThe treasures of the Hermitage, the largest museum in our country, are famous through­out the world. Only the Louvre is larger. The Russian MuseumThe Russian Museum of Saint-Petersburg is a world-famous repository of Russian art. It houses more than 300,000 items, including paintings, sculptures, drawings, water-colours and works of applied and folk art.
