Types of set-expressionsset-expressions which are similar to the free word-combination: put the arm on someone; have your finger on the pulse;coordinative structure: footloose and fancy-free; hand-to-mouth; hand over fist; set-expressions with the predicative function: bite someone's head off; lend a hand; let your hair down;. set-expressions in the imperative mood with the interjection character: My foot! Substantive set-expressions with the nounSet-expressions consist of 2 components: hand in hand - рука об руку, an eagle eye – зоркий, орлиный глаз Set-expressions consist of 3 and more components are rare: an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth – око за око, зуб за зуб; the eyes are the mirror of the soul – глаза - зеркало души. Verbal set-expressions with the nouncatch smb.'s eye – поймать, перехватить, привлечь чей-л. взгляд; be on smb.'s back – насесть, наброситься to shake a leg - танцевать, отплясывать; turn the other cheek – подставить другую щёку; crook one's elbow – наклюкаться, нализаться Verb+adverbcarry one's head high – высоко держать голову; not lift a finger - и пальцем не пошевельнуть; be thumbs down – быть против (кого-л. или чего-л.), запрещать, бойкотировать; not turn a hair - не теряя спокойствия, без малейшего смущения. Set-expressions consist of 3 and more main parts of speechto be all ears - слушать с напряженным вниманием; to turn a blind eye - игнорировать, не обращать внимания; not have a leg to stand - быть беспочвенным. “Head” set-expressionsto have a good head for something - иметь ясную голову, to have a good head on one's shoulders - иметь свою голову на плечах. to lose one's head - повесить голову / понурить голову; to keep one's head - не терять головы; to bury one’s head in the sand - зарыть голову в песок. to carry one’s head high - высоко держать голову; to wash one’s head - намылить голову/шею кому-либо. ломать над чем-нибудь голову - to cudgel one’s brains over something. “Hair” set-expressionsone's hair stood on end– волосы дыбом встают; to tear one’s hear out - рвать на себе волосы. to split hairs– придираться к мелочам; by a hair - на волосок. “Eyes” and “ear” set-expressionsострый глаз - sharp eye; to be all eyes - смотреть во все глаза / смотреть в оба (глаза; to open somebody’s eyes to something - открыть/раскрыть глаза на что-то. an eye-opener - вытаращить глаза; with an eye to doing something –положить глаз на что-либо / глаза загораются; the envy eye / green eyes - дурной глаз. to be all ears - во все уши слушать; fall on deaf ears – в одно ухо влетело, в другое вылетело. to pick up somebody’s ears - на­вострить уши. to be over head and ears in love - влюбиться по уши; to be up to the ear in work - по уши увязнуть в работе / быть по уши в работе “Nose” set-expressionsnot to see beyond the end of one’s nose - дальше собственного носа не видеть; to stole something under one’s nose– стащить что-либо у кого-либо из-под носа. to stick / poke one’s nose into other people’s affairs - совать свой нос не в свое дело. to look down one’s nose at somebody / with one’s nose in the air - задирать нос, важничать. “Mouth” and “teeth” set-expressionsto keep one’s mouth shut - заткнуть рот. to show one’s teeth - иметь зуб против кого-либо / скалить зубы; an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth – око за око, зуб за зуб; armed to the teeth - вооружён до зубов. “Tongue” set-expressionsto have lost one’s tongue - язык про­глотить; the word is on the tip of my tongue - на языке вертится. wag one’s tongue - языком тре­пать/ чесать; to hold one’s tongue - держать язык за зу­бами;a clever tongue will take you anywhere - язык до Киева доведет; a fool’s tongue runs before his wit язык мой - враг мой; to loose one’s tongue - развя­зать язык / быть невоздержанным на язык. “Heart” set-expressions from the bottom of one’s heart - от чистого сердца; with all one’s heart - от всего сердца, от всей душиheart is bleeding - сердце кровью обливается; to eat one’s heart out - сердце болит; to win one’s heart - по­корить чьё-либо сердце; to take something to heart - принимать что-либо близко к сердцу. to have heart of gold / big / soft / kind heart - иметь золотое / доброе / большое сердце. to open one’s heart to - открыть сердце / отдать кому-то свое сердце; to break one’s heart– разбить сердцедуша ушла в пятки - one’s heart sank into one’s boots; излить душу - to bare one’s heart. “Hand” set-expressionsto take something in hand / lay hands on наложить руку на что-либо / прибрать что-либо к рукам / взять в свои руки; to hold well in hand - держать в своих руках; to take oneself in hand - взять себя в руки; hands off! - руки прочь; to fall / get into somebody’s hands - попасться в чьи-либо лапы. to be tired / bound hand and foot - быть связанным по ру­кам и ногам. change hands - пе­реходить из рук в руки / ходить по рукам / из рук в руки; at first / second hand - - из первых / вто­рых / третьих рук (узнать, знать, купить что-либо). to seek somebody’s hand in marriage - просить руки; to wash one’s hands of - умыть руки. not to let one’s left hand what one’s right hand does – левая рука не ведает, что творит правая. “Shoulders” set-expressionsto have one’s head screwed on one’s shoulders on the right way - иметь свою голову на плечах; put your shoulder to the wheel - приложить старания; shoulder to shoulder – плечом к плечу. “Foot/leg” set-expressions little wit in the head makes much work for the feet - дурная голова ногам покою не дает. to stand on one's own two feet - стоять обеими но­гами на земле; to feel/find one's feet - обрести (твёрдую) почву под ногами; to get back on one’s feet - встать на ноги; to cut the ground from under one’s feet / to pull the rug from under one’s feet – выбить почву из-под ног; to be with one foot in the grave - стоять одной ногой в могиле. “Heel” set-expressionsбыть под пятой у кого-либо - to be under one’s thumb (под большим пальцем); hard on one’s heels / on the heels of / on the neck of - идти по пятам за кем-либо.to get up with one’s left foot foremost – встать с левой ноги.
