Madame Bonacieux wrote a note for D’Artagnan to take to the Queen. Later, D’Artagnan was jealous to see her with the Duke of Buckingham. The Duke loved the Queen, so they went to the palace. The Duke secretly met Queen Anne, kissing her hand and declaring his love. The Queen loved him, but she could not cheat on the King. The Queen gave the Duke her diamond necklace to remember her. Richelieu’s planned to catch the Queen so the King wouldn’t trust her. Bonacieux agreed to spy on his wife for money. The Cardinal found out about the Queen and the diamond necklace. A spy in London reported that the Duke had the twelve diamonds as buttons on his jacket. The Cardinal wrote a letter telling the spy Lady de Winter to steal two of the buttons. Then the Cardinal told the King everything and advised him to make the Queen wear the diamond necklace. The Queen was scared, so D’Artagnan went to London to get the diamonds back. Bonacieux overheard the Queen’s plan, and went to tell the Cardinal. Proof the statementCardinal Richelieu is a devious (scheming, deceitful) man. There are the pointsThe Cardinal would do anything for money and power. He paid Lady de Winter to spy for him in England. He convinced Bonacieux to spy on his own wife for money. He spied on the King’s wife to catch her doing something wrong. He only told the King the part of the truth that he wanted him to know. He convinced the King that the Queen did not love him and she was a traitor. Rochefort, the man with the scar, was his number one man. Rochefort, the man with the scar, fought unfairly against D’Artagnan. Dialog ActivityQueen Anne: I must get the diamonds back, but they are in England. Constance Bonacieux: You must write a letter to the Duke, Madame. Queen Anne: This could mean death for me and war for England and France. Constance Bonacieux: A messenger can go to England.
