«The American Dream» in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Novel «Tender is the Night» Prepared: Anastasija Storozhenko Supervisor: Olga Tomashevich Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald The aim of our research is to analyze the influence of the «American dream» on the main character of Francis Scott Fitzgerald’s novel «Tender is the night». During our research we tried to solve the following problems: Scientific novelty of our research is the analysis of Francis Scott Fitzgerald’s novel «Tender is the night» from the point of view of its importance for the showing of the theme of the «American dream» in writer’s works. The theoretical importance of our work is that we specify the place and the value of the theme of the «American dream» both for Fitzgerald's novel, and for the development of the national American literature. The practical importance can be explained by the fact that our analysis can be used for the lectures and seminars on the American literature of the XX-th century. Conclusions: 1. The occurrence of the «American dream» is connected first of all with the development of national and aesthetic self-consciousness of the American people which has begun even before the war of independence in 1776-1783. 2. There are several points of view about the occurrence of the «American dream». But the majority of the modern philosophers came to the conclusion, that the main idea of the «American dream» is revealed in the principle of individual freedom and spirit of adventurousness. 3. The ideas of the «American dream» and the evolution of people’s attitude to the given concept are closely connected with the stages of the development of the American literature. 4. Francis Scott Fitzgerald was one of the first among the American writers of the post-war period who showed in his works all aspects of the «American dream».
