New Zealand is a very interesting and beautiful country.
New Zealand New Zealand is situated in the South Pacific Ocean.The country includes some groups of islands.The two main islands are: North Island and South Island. The total area of the country is about 269.000 square kilometers.

Climate The climate of New Zealand is moist.

Mountains There are many mountains in New Zealand. The highest is Mount Cook (3.764 meters or 12.349 feet).
Rivers and lakes There are many rivers and lakes in the country. The chief river is the Waikato. Lake Taupo is the largest lake in New Zealand.
Animals and birds
Kiwi This interesting bird lives in the wet pats of the thick bushes. In the day-time the bird does not go out. It comes out only at night to find food. Kiwis cannot fly.
Kiwi The kiwi is now the symbol of New Zealand. Small children are often called kiwis.
ToataraToataras are the only surviving reptile species from the dinosaur era.

The kowhaiThe kōwhai is one of the best known native trees in New Zealand and it’s our unofficial national flower. Kōwhai imagery is popular in art works and has been used on postage stamps and coins.
The cabbage treeThe cabbage tree is one of the most distinctive trees in the New Zealand landscape. They grow all over the country, but prefer wet, open areas like swamps. Growing 12 to 20 metres high, cabbage trees (Cordyline australis) have long narrow leaves that may be up to a metre long.

WellingtonThe capital of New Zealand is Wellington. The city was founded in 1840. It is the second largest city of the country.

Big cities There are some other big cities - Nelson, Christchurch, Dunedin.
Population and language Nearly 3.5 million people live in the country. Most New Zealanders are descendants of the early European settlers. Maoris make up about 12 % of the country's population.The official language is English.
Parliament building New Zealand is an independent state now. It was a British colony in the past.But formaly the British Queen is still the head of New Zealand. Really the head of the government is the Prime Minister.The Parliament consists of one House only, the House of Representatives.
Industry There are many plants in the country. Paper and rubber industries are developed too. New Zealand exports wool, meat, butter.
Major industry New Zealand is rich in minerals. There are some major industries in the country, for example, iron and steel industry. The country has gas and petroleum.
Educational and cultural institutions There are educational and cultural institutions in Wellington. They are the University of New Zealand, Victoria University College and others.
