Legislative power is vested in the two chambers of Congress, the Senate and the House of Representatives. The judicial branch (or judiciary), composed of the Supreme Court and lower federal courts, exercises judicial power (or judiciary). The United States is a federal constitutional republic, in which the President of the United States (the head of state and head of government), Congress, and judiciary share powers reserved to the national government, and the federal government shares sovereignty with the state governments. Flag of the President of the United States President of the United States The President of the United States of America is the head of state and head of government of the United States. The president leads the executive branch of the federal government and is the commander-in-chief of the United States Armed Forces. The president is indirectly elected by the people through the Electoral College to a four-year term, and is one of only two nationally elected federal officers, the other being the Vice President of the United States. On January 20, 2009, Barack Obama became the 44th and current president. President Obama: It Gets Better As part of the It Gets Better Project, President Obama shares his message of hope and support for LGBT youth who are struggling with being bullied. The United States Congress The United States Congress is the bicameral legislature of the federal government of the United States, consisting of the Senate and the House of Representatives. The Congress meets in the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C. Both senators and representatives are chosen through direct election. Each of the 435 members of the House of Representatives represents a district and serves a two-year term. House seats are apportioned among the states by population. Each state, regardless of population, has two senators; since there are fifty states, there are one hundred senators who serve six-year terms. The terms are staggered, so every two years, approximately one-third of the Senate is up for election. Most incumbents seek re-election, and their historical likelihood of winning subsequent elections exceeds 90%. Rep. Kucinich: Only Congress Has the Power to Take this Nation into War Ohio Congressman Dennis Kucinich, a member of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, criticized President Obama's authorization of using military force in Libya without the input of Congress, as is stated in the Constitution unless there is an imminent threat to the United States. Kucinich says, "We cannot be the policemen of the world, as tragic as the situations are across the world, the United States cannot afford nor do we have the authority to go and intervene." The Supreme Court The Supreme Court of the United States is the highest court in the United States. It has ultimate (but largely discretionary) appellate jurisdiction over all state and federal courts, and original jurisdiction over a small range of cases. The Court, which meets in the United States Supreme Court Building in Washington, D.C., consists of a chief justice and eight associate justices who are nominated by the President and confirmed by the Senate. Once appointed, justices have life tenure unless they are removed after impeachment. United States Supreme Court Starts New Term The United States Supreme Court has started a new term on the first Monday in October for close to 100 years. Willliam Suter, the Clerk of the Supreme Court, explains why the term starts on this day.
