The Pharos of Alexandria
It was the last Wonder to be built in 280 BCIn ancient times it was a great help to ships trying to get through the rocky harbour entrance. The remains of the Pharos were found quite recently.
The Temple was large, rich and beautifully decorated.The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus
The Colossus of RhodesThe statue was built between 294 and 282 BC, to celebrate the defeat of the Macedonians, who had failed to conquer the city.
It could be seen from miles away.When the statue was pulled in 654 AD, 900 camels were used to take away the pieces.
The Statue of Zeus at Olympia.
It was built to celebrate the Olympic GamesIt stood for 1000 years before it was destroyed in a fire in the 5th century AD. The sculptor was the famous Pheidias. It was made of gold and ivory. We know what it looked like because it was shown on coins.
The Mausoleum at HalicarnassusIt was named after the man it was built for: Mausolus, the ruler of Caria, in 353 BC. By Roman times, 400 years later, the word mausoleum was used to describe any large tomb. Today only a few fragments of the Mausoleum remain.
The hanging Gardens of Babylon
The gardens were built in 600 BCKing Nebuchadnezzar built them for his wife Amytas.The ancient Babylonians grew the Gardens 75 metres above the ground.Today, visitors to modern Iraq can see the ruins of Babylon, though only a stone lion remains of the glory that was Babylon.
The PyramidsPyramids were built as royal tombs by ancient Egyptians. The first was built in 2560BC at Sakkara. It is 62 metres high. There are 80 pyramids still standing today in Egypt today.
The three most famous pyramids are near GizaThe Great Pyramid which was built around 2600 BC by the Pharaoh Khufu is 137 metres high. About 100 000 slaves were used to built it.
The ParthenonWas built in the 5th century BC in honour of the Goddess Athena who protected the city of Athens. The Parthenon is still filled with admiration and beauty.
