On this day British people celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ .
This holiday means the beginning of the new year and the new life.
English people sing carols on Christmas . It is a very important Christmas tradition. Every year there is a very big Christmas tree in the centre of London, in Trafalgar Square. It is a present from the people of Norway.
Most families decorate their houses with a Christmas tree, buy presents for the family and friends (for their nearest and dearest). People decorate houses with Holly plants . Holly is an evergreen plant with sharp-pointed small leaves and red berries. Red and green are the traditional Christmas colours. People send greeting cards to
relatives and friends. Many
children make their cards.
On Christmas Eve people put their
presents under the Christmas tree. Children hang Christmas stockings on the beds or near the fireplace. Christmas stockings
are not real stockings.
They are big and
beautifully decorated. Santa Claus comes down the chimney and fills the stockings with
presents.
Father Christmas (Santa Claus) has a white beard and white and red clothes.
He comes from the North Pole. Rudolph is Santa’s chief reindeer. It lives at the North Pole with Santa. It’s very cold there, and Rudolph’s nose is red. On Christmas Eve (the 24th of December) he helps Santa take the Christmas presents to children. They fly through the air very fast. Santa has a big sleigh to carry all the presents. For Christmas dinner people eat turkey, potatoes and green vegetables. Then they have the Christmas pudding. Traditionally people put a coin into
the pudding. It brings good luck to
a person who finds it. … and eat a Christmas cake. Many people can not imagine Christmas
