Zakharova Secondary School № 164Samara What  should you do if… Sometimes  pupils of elementary grade have problems with phonetics. It is not easy for them to identify difference between voiceless  and voiced  consonants, long and short vowels and etc. There are many words in English which differ only in one sound. They are called minimal pairs. These words are difficult not only to  identify but also to understand and to remember. 
There are some samples which can help  you  to overcome  this  situation.   Sheep [ ʃi:p ] on a ship [ ʃıp ]   Work [wɜ:k]   or   walk [wɔ:k]  
 Duck [ dʌk ] in dark [ dɑ:k ]  Think [θɪŋk] about a thing [θɪŋ]  Think [θɪŋk] about things [θɪŋz]  There are some more samples of such words and  if you want you  can try  to create your own slides explaining the difference between these words Cap or cab     [ kжp]  or [ kжb] Great  or grade    [ greıt] or [ greıd] Leave, leaf or live   [ li:v ] , [ li:f ] or  [ lıv ] Pan or pen    [ pжn ]  or [ pen ] Reach or rich  [ ri:tʃ ]  or [ rıtʃ  ] Sing  or sink    [ sıŋ ]  or [ sɪŋk  ]                               ... to be continued   So the decision of this problem is easy If you work with audio – pupils should listen more attentively and try to understand the meaning of the words through context.If they listen to you – you can attract  their attention on  all the differences in pronunciation showing pictures or explaining what is not clear.
