WINDOW ON AMERICA The national flag of the United States of America (or the American flag) has thirteen stripes of red and white, and a blue background with fifty small, white stars. Lincoln held the US together during the Civil War in the 1860's and gave American slaves their freedom. He is one of America's best-loved presidents. Colonial Williamsburg Colonial Williamsburg is the world's largest living history museum. There hundreds of restored, reconstructed and historically furnished buildings re-create a town which was the 18th-century capital of Britain's largest, wealthiest and most populous colony in the New World. Costumed interpreters tell the stories of the men and women of the 18th century--black, white and native American, slave, indentured and free--and the challenges they faced. The story of Colonial Williamsburg is also the story of the beginnings of the American ideas of freedom and equality that ultimately led to the birth of a new nation. Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming is considered the first national park in the world. It is known for its wildlife and its many hot springs and geysers. Old Faithful Geyser, one of the most popular sights in the park, erupts every 90 minutes. Visitors come to see buffalo, foxes, bears, wolves, moose, and the beautiful scenery the park offers. Bison, Yellowstone National Park The state of Texas, often called the Lone Star State, is the only state in the U.S. which was at one time an independent nation. Known for cowboys, cattle ranching, oil wells and NASA, headquarters of America's manned space program, Texas is the 2nd largest state in area. Niagara Falls, located on the Niagara River, has a vertical drop of more than 50 m. Horseshoe Falls is the most powerful waterfall (vertical height along with flow rate) in North America. The falls are located between the cities of Niagara Falls, Ontario in Canada, and Niagara Falls, New York. Hawaii is the newest of the 50 U.S. states (August 21, 1959), and is the only U.S. state made up entirely of islands. Hawaii’s diverse natural scenery, warm tropical climate, abundance of public beaches, and active volcanoes make it a popular destination for tourists, surfers, biologists, and volcanologists alike. On December 7, 1941, Japan bombed the US Navy base at Pearl Harbor. This event brought the US into WWII. The Pearl Harbor Memorial honors the men and women who died that day. Alaska is the largest state in the United States by area. It is situated in the northwest of the North American continent, with Canada to the east, the Arctic Ocean to the north, and the Pacific Ocean to the west and south. Alaska is the least densely populated of the 50 United States. America bought Alaska from Russia in 1867 for 7.2 million dollars.
