Thanksgiving Day
The origin of the thanksgiving dayThanksgiving Day was first celebrated in 1621 by the Pilgrim Fathers after their first good harvest.The Pilgrims sailed to America from Plymouth, England in September 1620.They came to America for religious freedom.They were among the first European settlers in America
The name of their ship was “Mayflower”.They landed at Plymouth Rock, in what is now the state of Massachusetts in December, 1620.
There were people living in America before the pilgrims arrived.These people were the Native American Indians.They hunted, fished and farmed to survive.
The pilgrims’ first winter in the New World was very difficult.The Indians taught them how to hunt, fish, plant, and survive in America.The crops did well, and in the fall of 1621 the pilgrims had a great harvest.They were thankful to Indians, and decided to celebrate with a Thanksgiving feast.
The Pilgrims prepared a dinner of turkey, corn, beans, and pumpkins.They invited the Indian friends to share this feast.The Indians brought their food to the feast, too ( even popcorn).Americans still celebrate the Thanksgiving Day in the fall.It is celebrated on the 4-th Thursday in November.
Thanksgiving nowadays…. Today Thanksgiving is a family holiday.It is a customary for all members of the family to gather at the home of their parents.The family eats a large traditional dinner.Usually with turkey, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie.
thanksgiving and ParadeNowadays it’s a customary to arrange a parade on the Thanksgiving Day.It’s a very splendid and magnificent attraction.The Gimbel Brothers started the parade tradition with a parade of toys in Philadelphia in 1920.
Some facts from The history of the holiday…Thanksgiving has been proclaimed by every U.S. president.It was Sara Josepha Hale, a magazine editor, whose efforts led to recognition of this holiday.In 1863 President Lincoln proclaimed the last Thursday in November as a national day of Thanksgiving.In 1941 Thanksgiving was finally sanctioned by Congress as a legal national holiday, as the 4-th Thursday in November.
The ceremony of forgiving the TurkeyAnnually it’s a tradition of the President of America to forgive one turkey.They let it to live on a farm.The ceremony of forgiving the turkey dates back to 1947.The first President who forgave it was Harry Truman.
