Dear Tom,
Well, as you can see from the address, here I am in hospital. It gets so boring lying here doing nothing that I thought I'd drop you a line.
The reason I'm here is that I had a bit of an accident coming back from a party in London last weekend. I'd had one or two drinks at the party — I wasn't drunk, but it was raining and the road was a bit slippery. Bill Rogers was with me, and we were doing about 50 along the main road when suddenly I saw some headlights coming straight towards me. I slammed on my brakes and swerved to avoid the other car, but skidded, and he crashed into the side of us. Bill wasn't hurt, luckily, and the chap in the other car was only shaken up a bit. He swears that I was on the wrong side of the road, but I'm covinced that he was. The car was a write-off, and I was lucky to escape with a broken arm and a few cuts and bruises. I was knocked out -my head must have hit the steering-wheel. It was amazing that it wasn't worse, especially since I wasn't wearing my safety belt. It was a nasty shock, I can tell you.
The doctors want to keep me in here for another week or so. I keep having headaches, and they want to have me in hospital in case I black out or anyting. I can't understand why, because I'm feeling pretty well, really. Anyhow, do write to me as it s so boring here with nothing to do.
Give my love to Mary and the children, and hope to hear from you soon,
Yours, John
P.S. My mother's just dropped in to see me, and she sends you her regards.
