L’Amse aux Meadows
On a summer’s day nearly 1,000 years ago, a ship from Greenland arrived in Newfoundland, Canada Leif Eriksson, the captain and his crew liked the warm climate and they decided to stay. They called the region ‘Vinland’ – the land of wine.
The Skraelings, who were probably Native Canadians, came to fight the Scandinavians. The Scandinavians left the region and moved to another part of Newfoundland – L’Amse aux Meadows – where they built houses and workshops. This was the first time that metal was made in the ‘New World’. We don’t know when they left but with time, grass grew over their houses and workshops.
In 1960, a Norwegian explorer – Helge Instad – found the ‘village’ and many things which were made by Scandinavians. Today archaeologists are still discovering more about life here 1,000 years ago.
Head Smashed-In
For over 10,000 years the Native Canadians people and the buffalo lived together in the pains of Alberta. The Blackfoot was one of the native Canadian tribes. They used the buffaloes for meat, clothes and for making tepees. They hunted the buffaloes by chasing them over high cliffs.
About 150 years ago, a young Blackfoot wanted to watch the buffalo falling over the cliff so he stood in a small place inside the cliff. The pile of dead buffaloes became higher and higher. The young man couldn’t move from his small space and he was killed. When the other men moved the buffaloes they found the young Blackfoot between the cliff and the buffaloes, with his head smashed in.
Nahanni National Park
The South Nahanni River runs for 322 km. It has many high waterfalls and dangerous rapids. It is a river of legends. Nearly a hundred years ago many people came here to look for gold. It was a dangerous place. Bears and wolves live in the valleys and the rapids can carry people away in seconds. Many people died mysteriously when they were looking for gold in the river – some disappeared in the river mist. When other adventures found headless bodies in the river they called the area ‘Deadman Valley’ and ‘Headless Creek’.
After 3-5 min reading pupils check their answers (slide № 10).
Please, divide in three groups, each group chooses the text and read it one more time. The task for groups to put these factual words in the order they appear in the texts and explain their meanings (slide №11).
L’Anse aux Meadows: Helge Instad, Leif Eriksson, Newfoundland, 1.000, Vinland Skraelings.
Head Smashed-In: 150, Native Canadian, Blackfoot, Alberta, tepees, 10.000.
Nahanni National Park: Headless Creek, 322, bears, Deadman Valley, legends.

Famous place Activities
Quebec City L’Anse aux Meadows Gros Morne Park Nahanni National Park Kluane National Park Rocky Mountain Park Wood Buffalo Park Anthony Island - You will listen to a Canadian tourist guide. She is talking about some more places in Canada and activities someone can do there. What does she say you can do in each park? You will have to make some notes about each place. But first think what kinds of activities you would expect to find in parks.
Teacher can write the list of pupils’ answers on the board. Pupils can then match the activities to the places while listening.
- Now make four groups. Choose two places in Canada for each group. After listening, groups will tell us about activities in their places. Listen and make some notes.
After the second listening pupils check their charts (slide № 14) and answer the question: Which activities would you like to do?
TapescriptHello everyone and welcome to Canada! I'm here to tell you about some of the parks you can visit in Canada. This is a big country so you may want to visit only one or two parks and then come back again later!
If you like stepping back into the past you could visit the French speaking part of Canada. Quebec City's fortified city, called ‘La Vieille Capital’ is still completely encircled by its old walls which were built nearly 400 years ago. You can see uniforms and weapons used by French and English soldiers 300 years ago.
On the west coast of Newfoundland at L'Anse aux Meadows you can visit a reconstructed Norse hut. You can learn how they built their ships and how they used metal to make nails, cooking pots arid jewellery.
If you like sailing, you can take a boat tour in Gros Morne Park into the glaciers or, if you are experienced, you can take a canoe on the South Nahanni river.
For tourists who like camping there are camp sites in the Gros Morne Park and in the Kluane National Park. I know that many of you come here to see wild animals. You can see wild goats, sheep, perhaps wolves and grizzly bears and buffalo in the Rocky Mountain park, Wood Buffalo park and Kluane and Nahanni parks. Bird watchers must visit Gros Morne, South Nahanni and Anthony Island.
If you like skiing, you can go skiing in the Kluane National Park and in the Rocky Mountains.
For those of you who want to see...
