Prepare to read
Talk about the answers to these questions with a partner.
Do you keep a diary? How often do you write in it?
Would you write a diary on the Internet so that everyone could read it?
Have you ever read somebody's personal web page on the Internet? Was it interesting?
Reading
Read the passage, the website and the review.
Dear Diary…
Once upon a time, a personal diary was something you kept hidden away. It was where you wrote down your most private thoughts and feelings, knowing that no one else would read it. Then along came the Internet, and now the idea of a private diary seems old-fashioned. These days many teenagers write diaries just for other people to read. In the US alone, one in five teenagers has their own web page. Their sites are filled with stories, poems, pictures and, of course, diaries.
Many teenagers like writing online diaries because they feel free to write anything. 'In real life, you can't always say what you think,' says Mandy, an eighteen-year-old from California. 'On the Internet, you can express yourself more freely.' Fans of Mandy's site log on to find out what she's been up to, what she's wearing and how she feels. She gets around two hundred e-mails a day from people who read her online diary. 'The best part is getting to meet people who like the same things I do, and getting e-mails from people who like what I'm doing,' she says.
However, some people are not sure that online diaries are a good idea. 'Teenagers need to be careful what they write on a website,' says Patricia Chadwick. Patricia is a mother of three, and runs the website parentsandteens.com. 'You don't know who is visiting your website and whether they will try to find you,' she says. 'It's playing with fire.'
Mandy doesn't agree. 'Sometimes people are a bit rude,' she says, 'but I just ignore them. Most of the feedback I get is positive.' She goes on, 'People reading other people's diaries is nothing new. My brother used to secretly read my diary when we were kids. The only difference is this one is seen by a lot more people!'
Jake’s Diary5 December 2002The new girl is HOT! Her name is Simone and she’s from California. She’s got beautiful legs. And she’s clever! She’s in two of my classes, history and computer science, so I get to see her every day. Maybe I’ll ask her out on a date. I’ll keep you posted...
My dad’s been telling me to get my college applications in, but I still don’t even know if I want to go to college. I’m thinking of joining the navy. My cousin Leon is in the navy and he gets to travel all over the world. He e-mails me photos of all the places he’s been. And chicks dig a guy in uniform!
I can’t wait for the Christmas break. My best friend Kenny and I are driving up to Aspen to go snowboarding. It’s gonna be awesome! I’ll put some photos of the trip on the site when I get back.

USAGE
Talking about why she likes the Internet, Mandy says, ‘In real life, you can’t always say what you think. ’
Real life means the time when we are talking to real people, at home, at school, at work or in the street. This is different from when we are communicating on the Internet. On the Internet, we have more freedom to say what we think.
Patricia Chadwick says that putting information about yourself on a website for everybody to see is playing with fire. This means that it is a dangerous thing to do, just like really playing with fire.
On Jake’s Home Page:
hot = beautiful
I’ll keep you posted. = I’ll tell you everything as soon as it happens.
chicks = girls
dig = really like
guy = boy, man
gonna = going to

Writing
Look at what Patricia Chadwick says about people who visit personal websites:
'You don't know who is visiting your website and whether they will try to find you.'
She is saying that perhaps someone who visits your website will try to find you. Perhaps they will, or perhaps they won't, but you can't be sure.
Whether can be used in this way to introduce a possibility which may or may not happen. You can use phrases like 'You don't know whether...', 'I'm not sure whether...' and 'I wonder whether...'
Read the sentences below. Then make new sentences which mean the same using ‘whether’
Perhaps it will rain tomorrow. Perhaps it won't rain.
I wonder whether it will rain tomorrow
Perhaps Julie is coming to the party. Perhaps she isn't coming.
I'm not sure_________________________
Perhaps there is life on other planets. Perhaps there isn't.
We don't know________________________
Perhaps the supermarket is open on Sundays. Perhaps it isn't.

5. Perhaps we are allowed to use our dictionaries during the test. Perhaps we aren't.
