T: And again we come back to our travelling. Do you hear the sounds of bagpipes?
I think we are in Scotland now.
S3: Scotland is a beautiful country with dramatic mountains, lochs and many offshore islands. Scotland is not densely populated. Most part of the Scottish population lives in Lowlands. In the Highlands the Scots speak English with their own accent. Besides English they also speak Gaelic, the ancient Scottish language. Many Scottish surnames start with Mac or Mc (e. g. MacDonald, McCalister). "Mac" means "son of". MacDonald and Campbell were once two main clans. Highland region is famous for the clan system, which was the basis of the Highland life in the early days. The word "clan" comes from the Gaelic and means "children" and clan's members were united by kinship from the common ancestor. Each clan had its own tartan. Though tartan was worn in other parts of Scotland, it was in the Highlands, where it became the symbol of clan kinship. Tartan was a kind of checked cloth and was worn by both men and women. But the kilt (a kind of skirt made of tartan) was worn only by men.

T: Our travelling is going on. We are in the smallest part of UK. We are in Northern Ireland. What can you say about this country?
S4: Northern Ireland is the smallest part of the UK. "Ulster" is sometimes used as equivalent to Northern Ireland because it contains six counties of the historic province of Ulster. Eire is a poetic name for the whole Ireland (Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland). Ireland is often called "the Emerald Isle". In this name its lush greenery is reflected. Thanks to the winds that blow from the Atlantic Ocean the soil and the air are warm and damp. That is why fresh green grass coveres the ground in Ireland and it makes the island look so beautiful. Belfast is the capital of Northern Ireland. It is a great industrial centre and a large port. For seven centuries Ireland was a colony of Britain.
T: Thank you! Very interesting facts.
Practicing Vocabulary 2.10.
Well, boys and girls what do you know about Holidays in Great Britain? What is the most important holiday and how it is celebrated? If you know the answers to these questions next task will seem easy for you. Now you will read description of different significant national holidays. You should read carefully and guess what holiday is described in the text. Raise your hand, give right answer and get points. Every true answer will give you one point.
The song from the film is known all over the world. Let’s listen to it!(исполняется песня из фильма «Титаник»)
Task 5. Guess what holiday is described in the text.
1. It is the most popular holiday in Great Britain. Every year the people of Norway give the city of London the present. It is a big tree and it stands in Trafalgar square. Central streets are beautifully decorated. Before this holiday groups of singers go from house to house. They collect money for charity and sing carols traditional songs. The fun starts the night before, on the 24 of December. This is the day when people decorate their trees. Children hang stocking at the end of their beds, hoping that Santa Claus will come at night and full them with toys and sweets. This is a family holiday. Relatives’ prepare for the big dinner of turkey and pudding and every one gives and gets presents.
2. This holiday is celebrated on October, 31, the eve of All Saints' Day, observed with traditional games and customs. It is the holiday of vampires, witches, ghosts and other evil spirits. Because of that children wear costumes and masks with their images. It is one of the oldest festivals in the world. It’s history numbers millennium, beginning from the Celtic festival Samhejn, the Roman Day of Pomona (the goddess of plants) and Christian "Day of all sacred". This holiday in strange way combines the Celtic tradition of celebrating of evil ghost and the Christian-worship all sacred.
3. This holiday falls on February 14, and is the traditional day on which lovers in certain cultures let each other know about their love, commonly by sending Valentine's cards, which are often anonymous. The history of this holiday can be traced back to an obscure Catholic Church feast day. The day's associations with romantic love arrived after the High Middle Ages, during which the concept of romantic love was formulated.
4. On the 1st of March each year one can see people walking around London with leeks pinned to their coats. А leek is the national emblem of Wales. The many Welsh people who live in London — or in other cities outside Wales — like to show their solidarity on their national day. The day is actually called after а sixth century abbot who became patron saint of Wales.
5. Traditionally boys from the shops in each town asked for money at Christmas. They went from house to house on December 26th and took boxes made of wood with them. At each house people gave them money. This was a Christmas present. So the name of December 26th doesn’t come from the sport of boxing – it comes from the boys’ wooden boxes. Now, this holiday is an extra holiday after Christmas Day.
Reflection 2.11. My Bonnie Lies over the Ocean
Now let’s have a rest. I’d like you to listen to a traditional Scottish folk song. Bonnie prince Charlie).
My Bonnie Lies over the Ocean)
